AquaForte Tornado II Protein Skimmer is an ideal unit for removing dissolved organic carbons (DOCs).  The new design utilizes an air pump instead of a venturi & thus will not incur any pressure loss.

1. Water enters the filter
2. Air is blown into the skimmer thru a supplied flowmeter to ensure a continuous flow of 0.5 LPM (30 LPH).
3. This air pressure insures the separation of the produced foam through the outlet pipe.

The protein skimmer is a combination of THREE different filter systems.  The filter operates

• biological
• mechanical
• chemical

A protein skimmer operates off of this principle:

Air pump creates bubbles & is mixed w/the water.  This mixture of air & water is forced thru the tower & "bio-rings" & insures a long contact time.

Adhesion = the surface of air bubbles attracts dissolved substances (DOCs) out of the water & can catch & trap substances like chemicals, waste particles, colorants (such as tannins) & algae.

Surface Tension = thick foam from the air & water mixture is separated from the newly cleaned water by a perforated cone & exits thru the foam outlet (to waste).

Waste = all dissolved substances such as phosphates, ammonia, humus acids, colorants (tanins), proteins and a number of heavy metals, are filtered out of the water and separated together with the foam.
